About the Gitcoin Climate Round
🎯 Goals
- Provide some seed funding to fund interesting web3 projects that can help coordinate efforts at a global scale to tackle the climate emergency
- Support local initiatives on the ground that get things done without having to go through old bureaucracy-heavy institutions.
- Accelerate the development of a new generation of NGOs that are organizing as DAOs.
💰How to donate?
Create a profile on Gitcoin.co (you will need a Github.com account) and verify your Gitcoin profile through the many different ways offered. This is to prevent bots from creating many accounts and skewing the matching fund algorithm. By doing so, you will increase your trust level and your donations will have up to 3x more weight.
Then go explore the 60+ climate projects on Gitcoin.co. Add them to your cart and donate some DAI, MATIC or ETH on Polygon or zkSync.
This video will walk you through the steps (it was made for the previous GR12 but it’s still pretty much the same steps)
☑️ Eligibility Criteria
Here are key factors when determining if your grant is eligible to be included in the climate round:
- The Grant must be in support of, or directly advancing the climate cause
- Your project is either already a DAO, planning to be, or is operating like a DAO (ie. you share the values of being open source, transparent, decentralized and you welcome people to join your project and contribute).
- The Grant may not have any form of quid pro quo that has financial value (a scenario in which a user gets some additional unique benefit/award in return for their donation)
- The Grant owner must be directly affiliated with the project and the funds must go to the project.
- The project should not have its own token, or have raised VC funding (let’s keep the funds for the aspiring projects!)
☝️ Note: If you are already a collective on All for Climate, you are de facto already meeting all those requirements.
☝️Note: If you don’t know how to manage your own crypto wallet for your project, or if your project can only operate with your local fiat currency, you can use one of the fiscal hosts in the All for Climate network. They can create a wallet for you (if needed), and convert the crypto into your local currency. Reach out on our discord in the #fiscalhosts-for-climate channel (if you have a non-profit and if you are comfortable with crypto, please join this network of fiscal hosts to help us offer an off-ramp to climate projects around the world).

Start a google doc with a one page description and share it with in the #gitcoin-climate channel on our discord (https://discord.allforclimate.earth).
Please share by February 24th so that we have time to review your application and add some comments/suggestions.

💡 Tips for your application
- Make sure you add a video and/or 2-3 photos.
- Make sure you have at least 2-3 people in the team (ask them to create an account on Github.com if they don’t already have one, then create an account on Gitcoin.co).
- Talk about how much money you’ve raised so far / spent so far (you may not have already raised money but you may already have a couple of expenses that volunteers have paid from their pocket) and what you will do with the money raised.
- Go straight to the point. You are not writing an application for a 20th century institution with a committee that reviews dozens of applications and looks for buzzwords. Bullet points are great. List concrete actions that you’ve already done (link to a few social media posts).
- Avoid using a contract wallet (Gnome Safe multisig or Argent) since the same address will be shown on your grant page whether people donate on Ethereum, zkSync or Polygon. Use a Metamask address to be safe (and transfer the funds to your multisig after the grant round for security)

❓ FAQ
Do we need to know how to use crypto to participate?
No. We are here to help you. We can retrieve the funds and add them to your open collective. You will just have to submit expenses for transparency.
We are already a non-profit, can we participate?
Yes, as long as you commit to the ethos of web3 and be super transparent with all your expenses (e.g. by using a platform such as Open Collective), have an open Discord or Slack or Microsoft Teams that anyone can join to ask questions or participate.
Our non-profit cannot accept crypto. Can we participate?
Yes. We can act as a fiscal sponsor for you. You will just have to submit individual expenses for transparency.
How much does it cost?
Gitcoin and All for Climate take no fees on the funds raised. There is just a 3% fiscal sponsorship fee if you need us to act as a fiscal sponsor for you (plus the fees of the crypto exchange to convert crypto into fiat). Those fees go into the participatory budget of All for Climate.
Note that there are fees associated with the blockchain used to make the donations. Donations made on Ethereum can have fees that go from $5 to $100 depending on the current conditions of the network. Donors can also use zkSync or Polygon (a few cents) to make donations with much lower transaction fees. The total amount matched by the funding pool is done on Ethereum. Claiming that amount requires a transaction that will cost between $10 and $100 depending on network conditions.
What if we are already familiar with crypto?
Even better. By all means, use your own crypto wallet. We are here to help, not to get in the way.
We already participated in a previous round, can we participate again?
Yes. But please make sure you add an “Update since last round” section to your Gitcoin Grant Profile. People want to see what you’ve done so far with the money raised. It’s about developing the muscle of raising money, deploying it on the ground, sharing the results, learning from them, and tweaking your process to improve over time. Rinse. Repeat.
Note that donors will be able to see how much money you raised last time.
When do we receive the money?
The donations that you receive arrive directly on your wallet on L1 or L2 (depending on the choice of the donor) and can therefore directly be used. For the matching part of the fund, you have to wait until the end of the round (March 27th), then it usually takes 2 weeks to consolidate all the results and clean the data to avoid abuse. After that, the final results are communicated and you can claim your part of the matching fund (and you have usually 2 months to do so). Claiming your part is a transaction on the Ethereum blockchain so you will have to pay gas fees for that ($15-$100 depending on network conditions).
If you need to convert the crypto to your local fiat currency, you will have to go through a local exchange (e.g. Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, …) which may also add some delay.
But I thought crypto was bad for the environment?!
Most transactions happen on Proof of Stake chains (e.g. polygon) which is the most energy efficient type of blockchain. Ethereum is well on their way to move away from proof of work to embrace proof of stake. The challenge of the climate emergency is such that we need to use all the tools at our disposal to operate “system change, not climate change”. We decided not to wait for all those tools to be perfect before starting using them. After all, we also use Facebook, Google, Android, iOS, etc. that are far from meeting all our ideal requirements in terms of transparency, open source and community ownership. We do with what we have. This is an emergency.
